Today we’re going to talk about the action of the right ankle in the golf swing…
This is one of those small things that can have a really big payoff. You might not realize it, but small movements in the right ankle can lead to large movements in the club… and it’s easy for a small mistake in your footwork to cause big problems.
A great drill you can try to work on the action of your right ankle…
Take your normal address position and place an extra golf ball snug against your right instep. Now take some small, slow swings focusing on the feeling of rolling your right ankle and squeezing that ball as you come through.
You want to keep your heel from popping up off the ground, and instead roll your ankle in towards the target. But again, start slow and with small swings.
As you’re doing this drill, be aware of your body posture. You want to maintain the same spine angle through impact, which should be a lot easier with improved footwork!
Finally I’d recommend working on your right ankle flexibility. It’s a great simple thing you can do at home, at the office, at the grocery store… anywhere really. Get in the habit of doing that and before you know it your swing will start to see the benefits of increased right ankle flexibility!
