Hit Your Irons Longer and More Solid (A Simple Drill)

Today’s lesson is a simple drill that will help you hit your irons longer and more solid.

Specifically, it will teach you to:

  • maintain your “lag”
  • clear your hips
  • lean the club shaft forward at impact

All of which lead to solid contact, more power, and a better ball flight.

This is a great lesson for just about every golfer, but you’ll especially want to pay attention if you suffer from coming over the top or casting.

A Drill to Hit Your Irons Better

I call this drill the “waggle hit” because it starts with a motion very much like the waggle many players take before their swing.

Now remember, the purpose of this drill is to teach your body and mind how the proper motion feels. So as you practice this, really focus on the feeling of:

  • “Trapping” the ball against the turf
  • The hips clearing and leading your body
  • Your hands in front of the ball at impact
  • The back of your lead wrist staying flat

Hit a dozen or so “waggle hits,” and then take a few full swings. I bet you’ll be surprised by how quickly the adjustments from the drill carry over and improve your iron shots!

OK, so that’s it for today’s lesson… It’s a great drill, but remember, to really improve your game you need to get out there and try it for yourself!
