Stop Topping the Golf Ball!

Today’s lesson is all about topping the golf ball. It’s one of the most frustrating mishits in golf…

Not only that, topping the golf ball can cost you serious strokes! Is it just me or does it seem to only happen when you need to clear that pond in front of the green?

Well worry no more, because in today’s video I’m going to teach you why you’re topping the golf ball… and then give you a simple drill to fix it!

Why You Are Topping the Golf Ball

Most players think they are topping the golf ball because they are pulling their body up through impact… And the common fix is to “keep your head down.”

That sounds logical, but in my experience can actually make the problem even worse!

The truth is most of my students who top the ball are actually keeping their body too far down through impact! This causes a chain reaction where they pull up with their arms in order to not hit the ball fat – leading to the dreaded topped shot where they are hitting the ball on the upswing.

A better way to stop topping the golf ball is actually to work on rotating and extending your body up through impact… while at the same time allowing your arms to extend fully down and out to the ball.

A great drill is to practice the feeling of “standing up” through the hitting area while the arms go down and out. You’ll get a much better idea of what I’m talking about by watching the video (the drill is right around the 2:10 mark).

Hope you enjoyed today’s lesson! Spend a little time practicing the drill I gave you and I promise you’ll stop topping the golf ball in no time!
